But as a driver, you should know that, it’s also your responsibility to make sure that your tyres are adequate and safe for road use. Your cars tyres need to be inflated to the recommended pressure and they need to have the adequate amount of tread on them too. If they aren’t and you get pulled over by police and they check them, they will issue you an on the spot fine and possibly even points on your licence! Not the greatest start in your driving career.

We’re sure you’ve already checked them before you purchased your car, and we’re sure you already know that eventually, you will need new tyres fitted. Whether they are new new tyres or part worn tyres. It’s just part and parcel of being a driver!

And we know that this is something you probably don’t want to think about until the time comes, but its better, (so much better) to make sure you know how you can go about it and where you can go to get new (or part worn) tyres from when the time comes!

When the time comes, or even if you’re in any doubt now. Just pop into Seal Island Tyres at Unit 10, Enborne Business Park (Next to the Nature Reserve) on Selsey Road in Sidlesham, PO20 7NE. And we’ll give you a free recommendation there and then as to whether you should fit new (or part worn tyres) or tell you when you will likely need them based on how much mileage you’re doing every month and when you’re likely to need a tyre replacement fitted.

Unsure if your tyres are adequately safe now? Give us a call or pop in to see us for a free quick quote. You can reach us on 01243 641 600 or mobile 07557 515385. How to Know Your Tyre Type, Size and Speed Rating Etc?

For people not used to the buying of used tyres, the thought of needing to know what tyre size you need from the 100’s that exist might be a daunting experience.

Some can find it a hard to find but it’s quite simple. The simplest way to discover your current tyre size is actually to look at your tyres which are currently fitted. All the details you’ll need are shown on the sidewall of the tyres.

Primarily the combination of characters and digits on the tyres sidewall  can appear confusing, nonetheless when you understand just what each one means it will be simple and easy to understand.

Essentially, there are usually 4 to 5 sidewall markings. In most cases there will be 4. But sometimes there may be up to 5 for special tyres or commercial tyres.

Tyre Guide

Tyre Sidewall Markings Explained

  1. 205: This 1st part of the code informs you of the width of the tyres in millimeters.
  2. 65: This informs you the height of the tyres sidewall as a percentage of its width. Sometimes called the ‘profile’ or ‘aspect ratio’.
  3. R15:  This informs you that the tyre is of a radial structure (the R) and what the diameter of the tyre’s inner rim is in inches.
  4. 95: This number gives details relating to the max weight the tyre can take on.
  5. H: This letter signifies the fastest speed the tyre can take. Such as the load rating.

Now you know how to find these details. All you need to do now is use our Tyre Selector Request Tool and order your part worns online.

Winter Tyres in West Sussex For Your Car

To ensure complete safety, fitting high quality snow tyres is critical during the frozen winter months as snow tyres have better grip on snowy and icy roads which will help you to stop quicker and improve the steering of the car also.  Dangerous driving conditions inevitably result in road closures, stranded vehicles, minor accidents and long delays. All usually caused by not having the correct tyres for the environment.

Seal Island Tyres can install snow tyres on your car for you. Whether you have a small or lightweight or heavyweight car, van or lorry, you will find you will benefit from having Snow tyres on your car.

Are winter tyres okay for all seasons?

Snowy tyresNot particularly because the tread on a snow tyre has a more aggressive tread pattern than summer car tyres. Although snow tyres are designed to retain their flexibility at low temperatures unlike in the summer time when the roads are hot. Remember, because you’re using winter tyres for your summer tyres for at least a quarter of the year, you’ll also save wear on your other tyres which prolongs their life also. Lastly, rubber can become brittle at low temperatures so summer tires are not suitable to be used in winter times.

How do snow tyres work?

extreme snow tyre chainsSnow tyres have a uniquely designed tread and rubber compound composition to provide the best road grip, handling and safety for drivers. Snow tyres have different tread patterns which are more of a block pattern with large center groves to dissipate the water and slush. The blocks give you more road contact surface but don’t clog up with snow because of the spaces between them. They also have slits known as “sipes” which help to dissipate the slush and water.

Now obviously always buying new snow tyres every year could be expensive so you should store your snow tyres properly. Seal Island Tyres is happy to fit them for you whenever you need. Simply bring them in with you and we’ll fit them to your car there and then.

In places where the weather is extreme, like Alaska. The law makes it mandatory to use snow tyres. Over here in the UK it is optional of course but definitely well worth considering for your own benefit. If you’d like to know more about snow tyres and whether we can fit them to your car then give us a call on 01243 641600 or 07821 566948 and we’ll be happy to help.

Safe Snow Driving Tips

  • Only drive in the snow unless you absolutely have to. Traveling in the daytime is safer than at night.
  • When driving – always leave more room between you and the vehicle in front to allow for increased braking distances.
  • If going on long distances in the snow – always tell someone of your plans and take a mobile phone for emergencies.
  • Brake gently to avoid skidding and if your wheels start to lock up ease off the brake slow also.
  • Keep to the crown of the road, where the water will be shallower, and look out for the white line
